Reshaping the Toon is a participatory arts engagement project responding to Dominoes by Station House Opera, a public art performance in Newcastle that uses thousands of large breeze blocks as a giant, moving line of dominoes winding through a city's streets, parks, and buildings. Inspired by the playful nature of Dominoes, you are invited to cut, fold, and construct paper models of Newcastle landmarks using our ready to print kits that are available to download for free here.
Suitable for: Ages 6+ (Ask an adult to help with cutting if you need it.)
You will need:
• Your printed paper city sheets • Thin cardboard (such as a cereal box) (optional, for stronger buildings) • Glue • Scissors • Coloured pencils, pens or crayons • Tape (optional) • Dominoes (or make your own from card)
Time: About 30–45 minutes
Let's Make a City!
Want stronger buildings? Glue your paper city sheets onto thin cardboard (like an empty cereal box) and let the glue dry before you start cutting.
Cut out all of the city pictures.
Fold the tabs at the sides so each building can stand up by themselves.
Decorate your city! Add your own drawings, colours, people, trees, cars or anything else you can imagine.
Build your city by arranging the buildings in any way you like.
Create a domino run that travels through your city, inspired by Station House Opera. Can you make the dominoes twist, turn and weave between the buildings?
Ready, set... go! Tip the first domino and watch the chain reaction race through your paper city.
Challenge: Can you make your domino run even longer? Try adding bends, bridges or tunnels to make it even more exciting!
