Arts Council England Research and Development Project

Edmond has been awarded an Arts Council England Research and Development grant to introduce digital processes to woodblock printing in his visual art and design practice. The project will provide dedicated time to master both traditional and digital woodblock-making techniques, expanding his creative skills and enabling him to explore new printmaking methods. Through research and development, Edmond aims to produce a series of printed samples that demonstrate new possibilities for woodblock printing, ensuring this historic practice continues to evolve in the modern era.
A key inspiration is the Bewick Revolution—Thomas Bewick’s innovative wood engraving printmaking technique, pioneered in the North East, which enabled woodblocks to surpass copperplate engraving in detail and popularity. Bewick’s approach moved away from imitating painting, instead embracing the unique visual language of black-and-white relief prints. Edmond’s research and development will build on this legacy, exploring the “truth to the medium” that Bewick championed, while integrating today’s digital tools.
Edmond also plans to engage with local printmaking studios across the North East, connecting with a network of artists and makers committed to keeping and advancing traditional printmaking. By fusing established handcrafted printmaking techniques with digital innovation, the project aims to inspire new directions in woodblock printing and highlight its relevance to future generations.
