Band Stand was a Brass Pitch visual art commission for Durham Brass International Festival that set out to challenge perceptions and understanding of brass music through exploring its historical and contemporary social contexts.
The installation was inspired by the band stands and brass band uniforms of the Victorian era. Life size paper military uniforms formed a sculptural construction celebrating the union of community through the brass band movement. The costumes were made from paper cloth maps to symbolise the expansion in geographical travel that accompanied the brass band movement.
